For nearly eighty years, Schrafft's was the place to meet and eat in city after city. It was the brainchild of Frank G. Shattuck who turned himself into a millionaire by taking the products of a Boston chocolatier on the road and growing the business by adding comfortable surroundings serving wholesome American food.
Something magical happened in the process. In the New York area alone, the urban landscape was dotted with more than fifty "stores" as the restaurants were called, and to many people they became their second home.
Celebrities were frequent customers. Women with their children lunched there and businessmen conferred over cocktails. And of course, all patrons recall the lovely Irish waitresses and luscious ice cream sodas.
